500VA, Low-Profile, Conduction Cooled Inverter Drives AC Appliances in Railway and Other Rugged Environments

31 March 2005

Absopulse Electronics Ltd’s RSI 500 Series rugged, low-profile inverter delivers 500VA continuous sinusoidal voltage. Originally designed for an on-board railway application, the RSI 500 is also suitable for driving AC appliances in industrial, utility, mining, marine and other harsh environments.

The RSI 500 is ruggedized and conformal-coated to ensure resistance to shock, vibration, humidity, moisture, dust and insects. It is conduction / convection cooled and rated for operation over a 0°C to 50°C temperature range, with -40°C available as an option. The chassis measures 2.58in x 10in x 13.8in and weighs 9lbs (4.2kg).

This microprocessor controlled, pulse-width-modulation design provides 115VAC or 230VAC continuous at 50Hz, 60Hz or 400Hz, from a nominal 110VDC input (77VDC to 154VDC range). Other input voltages are also available. Line regulation is within 0.5%, and load regulation is within ±5% from no load to full load. Tighter regulation is also possible. Total harmonic distortion at its output is less than 5% at full load and efficiency is at least 78% at full load.

The RSI 500 is filtered to meet EN55022 Curve B and is designed to meet the stringent requirements of EN50155 and EN50121-3-2 for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock. Protection features at the input include inrush current limiting and reverse polarity protection. Output protection includes current limiting, short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown with automatic recovery in case of continuous overload or insufficient airflow.

This inverter can be customized for other input/output and mechanical requirements. Further options available include an output fail alarm (Form C), adjustment for output voltage and frequency, and remote shut-down.
