Handheld has been selected to provide handheld computers for the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

On Tuesday 27 July, at the start of the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, all entrance tickets will be checked using rugged handheld computers from Handheld. As many as 45,000 tickets will be checked daily.

The event will run for 6 days at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium. The contract for the rugged hardware was awarded to one of Handheld's Spanish partners and the software solution was developed by a local system integrator.

The Handheld PDA chosen for the event is the Nautiz X5 which has a built-in 2D barcode reader. The Nautiz X5 comes with a very powerful battery which means that it can handle long operating hours, even in high temperatures. A full VGA transflective touch display provides crisp and clear resolution even when working outdoors in bright sunlight.

The Nautiz X5 is rugged and can handle being dropped. It is also dust-tight and waterproof with a small size and light weight which made it a natural choice for event organisers.

"Event management is a growing market and we see great potential for our products in this vertical," said Jerker Hellström CEO of Handheld. "It is particularly gratifying that the event is a European championship and we sincerely hope that our Swedish stars will succeed and win some medals. For us, this event is already a success."

The Nautiz X5 rugged PDA has a robust 806 MHz X-scale processor, which makes among the fastest handheld computers on the market. The Nautiz X5 comes standard with 256MBb of RAM and 512MB of Flash memory and it also has a microSD slot for extra storage. The product is equipped with a three megapixel camera with autofocus, integrated barcode reader or 2D imager, WLAN, Bluetooth, 3G cellular and GPS.
